The Songwriting Challenge

Like any other skill, songwriting is something that should be done regularly so that you can get better at it. Often a struggle that young songwriters face is what to write about. Some topics seem to broad, some too small. Whether you’re never written a song before, or you’re a songwriter looking for some inspiration, or you just want to challenge yourself, I present to you The Songwriting Challenge.

There are lots of songwriting challenges out there, I’m sure, but all the ones I could find required a subscription or a fee. This is just my thought, but I think the challenge should be open to everybody. So I challenge you. Songwriters, musicians of all ages, just budding or highly seasoned, I challenge you to take up the gauntlet.

Here are the rules.

One song a week.

Five Weeks.

I will have many more weeks worth of topics, which you can certainly continue to do. However the challenge only lasts for five weeks. Sometimes the topic is a word, sometimes it is a prompt to get you to write a song around it. You can use it however you’d like, as long as you’re creative!

Whether you publish them anywhere is optional, the idea is just to stimulate your creativity. If you do post them somewhere, include the tag thesongwritingchallenge.

The first five topics are below.

Week 1: A note in a bottle

Week 2: a lullaby

Week 3: from the perspective of your favorite book character

Week 4: a song for an adventurous montage

Week 5: “handfuls of light”

I’ll be doing this challenge at somepoint, so check out my channel for that eventually! Happy songwriting!
